07-30-06 - Our pretty baby has gone home to her new family. She has been adopted by the Aunt of one of our volunteers/adopter. Kila's 2-legged sister already knows sign language so we know she will have the care she needs and deserves!

She will also have a new Mommy who will love and take care of her and two
cousins Georgia and Jeff who are also L&F Dogs. We are looking forward to regular updates and pictures from everyone from the family. Kila is our first deaf Dob pup to go home --- we are very happy for that beautiful little woman!

update 7/16/06- Kila is deaf? Don't let her hear that, because she doesn't know! Nothing gets past this very astute and intelligent Dobie girl. She is full of life and loving every minute of it. She loves everything, people, dogs, toys, food, water (she sticks her whole face in it when she drinks.) SHe is such the cuddler and likes to be on your lap, not realizing that her long legs are practically hanging off of you. What a beauty she is! Her coat is so shiny and her eyes so clear when she looks at you and cocks her head. You can see those wheels turning. She is beginning to know sign language and "listens" very well. Yes, Kila is deaf, but don't tell her that because she doesn't know, and really -- she doesn't care.

***These puppies CANNOT BE ADOPTED BY FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN-THEY NEED A LOT OF ATTENTION BECAUSE OF THEIR SPECIAL NEEDS!!!*****

All (3) girls are being spayed on August 28th, 2006

This lovely red pure Doberman girl is named Kila (Kee-Lah) which means strong.

05/28/06 Two weeks ago, I got an URGENT e-mail from Melanie, one of our weekend playdate foster Moms, who told me about a backyard breeder, Eileen Holtz, who has recently relocated from Allentown PA to Newark, DE and was about to put down three healthy 10 week old Doberman pups because they were born deaf.

This is why I despise backyard breeders. They bring disability and death with every litter they produce.

She had them outside in a very small fenced in area that just had dirt and a tarp over it. She had (5) puppies in an area too small for (1) puppy.

I put my personal feelings about this breeder aside for the sake of the pups and agreed to go to her home to pick them up. My goal was to just get those pups away from her before she destroyed them.

When I picked them up, two were running around in a small area playing and chewing on bones & seemed "normal"
and the third she carried in her arms so I would not notice any problems.

Once I got them home I realized that these puppies were not just deaf, they also had some balance problems, especially the one she had carried.

When we took them to the vet, they were also diagnosed with severe parasites, ear infections, you name it!! At first our vet said they looked like they had distemper because they kept spinning around. But that was from severe ear infections and mild to moiderate neurological damage.

Makana is the one with the worst neurological damage with the red collar. She also has a defective ear that leans sideways. This is again the work of the breeder, who told the vet that she does not give them pain medication when she crops their ears to save MONEY!!!

Now that they are treated, all the pups, including Makana, are happy, playful, and otherwise extremely healthy pups who are growing at an amazing pace. We will need sponsors to help pay for their care until we can find them permanent homes, which may be a long, long time. These three little girls, black (Nani), red (Kila), and the most damaged (Makana), are beautiful pups but I do not know how adoptable they are, since they will need very special families to care for them.

All L&F dogs/pups are crate & potty trained, temperament tested, have been chosen for sweet, gentle dispositions, and are living in foster homes with families. They each have had the following:

Already SPAYED/NEUTERED (pups under 5 months must be prepaid)

Microchipped

Tested for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia

On HeartGuard & Frontline Plus (as long as they are with us)

Complete series of Distemper, Parvo vaccines and Rabies.

Intra Trac ll Kennel Cough

Two De-Wormings

PLEASE NOTE: Any dog/pup adopted from us must have a fenced in property either physical or Electric Fence. The fence must be installed
before we will proceed with processing an adoption application.

If you need a fence for your dog, but are not permitted to have a physical fence, or chose not to, please visit our friends at Pet Stop. Mention that you saw them at our website and they have promised to send us a donation to help our rescue work.

We do not adopt our puppies to people who work full-time. Part-time
is OK. We do not believe in leaving infants in crates all day.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily, whether it is through a family member, neighbor or petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.

We have several petsitting service companies that we can recommend:
