L&F Dog Rescue is not a "public shelter" but rather a foster-based NO-KILL adoption center based in New Castle, DE 19720. We are a small -- but highly effective rescue group with a network of foster homes that help take care of our homeless pets until we can find permanent, loving homes for them. Adoptions are not done on a first come first serve basis; applicants are selected based solely on which home best matches the pet's temperament and needs.
EFFECTIVE 2-12-10 - We have a minimum non-refundable adoption donation fee of $200. We also require an additional $100 which is a tax-deductible donation to the rescue to help absorb our vet costs. This does not come close to our actual costs but we are trying to help a many pups/dogs go home as possible. We are a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit so we will provide a tax receipt for $100.00 with each adoption.
New Adopters - If you adopt a pup or dog, Petfinder and PetFirst are pleased to provide new adopters with an introductory pet insurance offer for just $5 for the first month and $14.95 each month thereafter. This plan provides $1,000 of accident and illness protection for newly adopted dogs and cats. To redeem this special offer, sign up online within 20 days of your adoption.

ADOPTION INFORMATION
We consider it an HONOR to be able to do what we do. We love being able to rescue these unwanted and homeless gentle creatures and make a lifetime difference in the lives of these dogs by finding them permanent, loving homes.
There is nothing "wrong" with the animals we rescue -- they are condemned to death due to the severe pet overpopulation problem in our area. The shelters we work with have no choice but to euthanize perfectly loving animals to make way for the endless stream of new animals that arrive at their door each day.
At L&F Dog Rescue we ensure that each pet we adopt out is spayed or neutered. Since we guarantee that our pets cannot reproduce, they cannot contribute offspring to add to the overpopulation in our community.
There are circumstances where you may not be able to adopt the pet you have requested, but we are always willing to work with our potential adopters to find the right pet and will refer you to another rescue or shelter if we do not feel we can help you. We will do our best to expedite this process but we are a small, home based, all volunteer rescue group and time is always at a premium.
Adoption donation costs are needed to help re-pay the costs incurred by Lost and Found. We pay a ”pull” fee to each shelter which helps support their efforts to save as many as possible by helping the pups/dogs into rescue. We pay transport costs, which includes gas & tolls. While fostering them in our homes we provide food, Heartworm medication, & Frontline Plus for their duration with us. Additionally they always go home with one of each.
On the average, the actual cost of caring for a dog is $400 without any medical complications.
Our mission is to help all our dogs find great homes and it takes a lot of money to accomplish that. We all donate our time but there are expenses which include medical care, food, and supplies (such as crates, leashes, etc) and in addition, with the current gas prices, transportation costs from shelters and to and from vets have skyrocketed.
We pay all these costs ourselves, then are reimbursed some of our costs at the time of adoption. We currently do not receive any grants or funding, so we must rely on the adoption donations in order to continue to provide the excellent medical care and spay/neuter for all our "shelter kids".
In our experience, if an adopter cannot afford the fee, perhaps they cannot afford to keep the dog healthy, happy, and groomed: however, if they view the adoption donation as an investment in adopting a medically sound, pet that has already been vetted, spay/neutered & microchipped - we feel they are more likely to be a responsible pet owner.
