NEW UPDATE: Lost and Found Dog Rescue celebrated our 3rd birthday 02-24-07. We had a very special birthday presentWinston was able to leave after 16 days in the hospital. Winston is with his new Foster Mom MaryAnn Bishop. He still has such a long, long way to go, but our little boy is a happy go-lucky pup that we have been advised is a chew-a-holic. Who would not be bored being in the hospital all that time?

Everyone at Brandywine just ADORES this darling pup! He did receive preferential treatment at the hospital.  Every time I went to visit he was laying in the arms of someone from the staff getting a belly rub!

Winston, like ALL L&F Dog Rescue dogs, is a sweet and gentle born wiggle-butt! Other then the way his leg looks; you would never know the extent of his injuries. Dr. Gray started him on his PT and he has already had several underwater treadmill sessions.

Winston
still has many, many more to go, but my experience with our "broken dogs" is that when they receive the type of surgery Brad Gray provides and the follow-up PT, these dogs not only get to live -- but live to run again! The best part of my job when I get to see one of our "broken dogs" run like a deer.

Winston, and our other "broken dogs"  Sheila, Austin and our Conall, have only been saved because of the talent, dedication and pure PASSION of Dr. Brad Gray of the Brandywine Vet Hospital in Chadds Ford PA (610)459-0500.

Dr. Gray
is a Vet who also does physical rehabilitation therapy at his state of the art facility. He has a special interest in orthopedics. He has the passion to make them them whole again.

Dr. Gray is the main reason Lost and Found Dog Rescue just celebrated our 3rd Birthday and has placed 305 puppies and dogs in their forever homes. We are able to rescue the volume of dogs we do and are able to make exceptions to rescue "broken dogs" who are always euthanized in shelters. Shelters are forced to euthanize hundreds of puppies and healthy dogs daily throughout the country due to over-population. They certainly can make exceptions for "broken dogs" or
sick dogs.

I will update the donations that have come in and more about
Winston (sorry just coming out of a week of the flu) and list our second birthday present ASAP.

NEW!!!  UPDATE: 02-09-07

Update from Brad Gray VMD CCRP -
Brandywine Vet Hospital,
Chadds Ford PA

Winston is an extremely pleasant 35 pound mix breed that was presented to me last week for a repair of his right Anterior Cruciate Ligament. There were no previous films taken so I decided that it would be best to start from scratch for a diagnosis. I sedated him and felt his right knee. This revealed that his problems were more significant that first thought. He did in fact have a torn right ACL, but he also had a medically luxating patella.

These are surmountable injuries that can be repairs simultaneously. We then took radiographs of his hips and both knees. Not only did he have 10 shotgun pellets in his hind end (added to the 6 pellets in his front end and one pellet lodged in his scrotum) but he also had a fracture of his right lateral femoral condyle that went completely through his articular surface.

This made the repair very complicated. His future comfort is fully based on whether or not this fracture will heal anatomically correct fashion. The ACL and patellar luxation were repaired and carry a good prognosis. If the cartilage in his knee does not have a smooth surface, he will develop arthritis that will cause him discomfort. I placed a 32 mm screw through his femur to hold the fractured piece in place. If his articular surface does not heal well, amputation of the right hind limb may be recommended for his comfort.

I have placed him on joint supplements, pain medication and special food for joint health. He will need follow up radiographs and extensive rehabilitation in the near future. His current bill is approximately $2,000 at a highly discounted rate and he will need a lot of care to see that his fracture will heal properly with a possible future amputation surgery. The future costs may be as high as $1,000 or more.

He is one of he nicest dogs that we have treated, and when you consider his difficult past, it is even more remarkable that he has such a wonderful attitude.

Warmly,
Brad Gray VMD CCRP - Brandywine Vet Hospital, Chadds Ford PA

This is our newest young boy that came from the same area in South Carolina as our new boy Austin. We are very lucky here at Lost and Found Dog Rescue because thanks to our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Gray of Brandywine Veterinary Hospital, he allows us to take what we call "Broken Dogs." These are dogs that are killed in shelters due to their injuries.  Shelters are forced to kill thousands of healthy dogs daily -- so they certainly cannot get involved with dogs that have been hit by cars, shot or have extensive illnesses.

Winston has already had surgery to repair his leg. The costs for the surgery and additional physical therapy are well over $2,000. His breaks and injuries were quite severe and it took Dr. Gray 4 hours to make the repairs! We're sure he will make a complete recovery and be good as new thanks to Dr. Gray.

Dr. Gray said that he had also been shot in his back and rear (and in his very private parts) & he lost count after counting 10 pellets in his back end.  It is as if someone used him for target practice!

Winston did test positive for Heartworm and when they did an x-ray, they found another 6 pellets of buckshot in his chest from being shot. He has been treated for the Heartworm, which was a mild case due to his youth.

Winston is young, approximately 1 year old German shepherd mix and is small to medium size. As you can see, he has already been through much trauma in his young life. Winston comes to us from a rural, high-kill shelter in South Carolina. He was the shelter favorite and the shelter staff begged rescuers to find him a home. No wonder, Winston is the sweetest, friendliest little guy. Everyone who has met Winston falls in love with him. Winston loves people and loves to cuddle. He has German shepherd markings, with soft ears and the cutest face that resembles a Teddy bear. Winston is up-to-date with shots and has been neutered.

Our wish for Winston's (as with every L&F dog) is to find him a family of his own to love and love him. We could use your help by sponsoring Winston or Austin or our new girl coming in Sheila. Lost and Found Dog Rescue provides a caring and a nurturing environment until we adopt each individual dog. However, the same way it costs money to care for a healthy dog, it also costs money to provide constant and continual care, especially for a special needs dog like Winston, Austin and Sheila.

By sponsoring a dog, you can help to alleviate our costs and allow this rescue to continue to save the dogs we do. Sponsoring a dog may take the form as a weekly or monthly donation, or you can make a one-time donation on our secure Website where we take VISA/MasterCard and PayPal. It's your choice!

Payments may also made directly with Visa/MasterCard, AMEX at Brandywine Vet Hospital in Winston's name.

Please inform Lost and Found Dog Rescue if you make a direct payment to Brandywine Vet so we can provide you a tax receipt for this donation as soon as possible.
