About Lightning - Adopted!

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Color: White
UPDATE from his new foster Mom Jane:

He is such a sweetie! He loves HASSAN and stands with his front paws on Hassan's shoulders and gives Hassan BIG kisses.

Lightning likes: The refrigerator - he knows about the good things that come from there.

He likes the stove - he knows good things come from there also.

He dislikes his dog food because better things come from the refrigerator and stove.

Neighbors brought gifts: square size rawhide chewy - he loves them. Another neighbor brought a brush and a toy - squeak toy with a tug of war braid - he loves both and he really knows how to play tug of war. Someone has spent a lot of time with him.

He hates to sleep - he finally fell asleep at midnight and got up at 5 am. His face reaches Hassan's face as Hassan sleeps. Lightning manages to wake up Hassan by just reaching over and give big kisses. Lightning likes to sleep next to Hassan and on the floor - between the bed and the cedar chest! Lightning looks like a sleeping polar bear!

When I got up this morning for my shower, I left Lightning in the bedroom with a sleeping Hassan. Well, Lightning wanted none of that - and barked - it is the first time that I heard him bark! What a cutie.

We have blocked the stairs at the top and lock the bedroom door at night so he is safe. I also have to be very close to him while he is on the deck because the rails do not block him well enough. I am going to have to enclose the rails completely so that he doesn't sneak between them. But he found a special spot in the garden where he pee pees - so we are starting to get a routine.

Got to run. More later. Lightning sends kisses.

JANE

This young man is a true albino and was born blind although he is not deaf. He is very friendly, docile, and a real people dog. We pulled him from the SPCA because some very kind & wonderful people have agreed to pay his medical bills if we could help him find a home. We are very happy to be able to help.

When he and I went out to my car, since he's been blind all his life I found that he just walks straight ahead like a normal dog .... until he bumps into something. His benefactor Erica said "The twist is the blind dog needs a seeing eye person!"

We are trying to see if we can find a Foster Home for this young man. If you have ever wanted to save a dog's life, fostering, in my opinion, is the best and most rewarding way to do that.

All medical bills, food, crate, and toys will be provided. We just need someone who is willing to give him some hugs and kisses until we can make a good match for him.

We do need some help though from you kind people who love animals so much you spend hours looking at dogs on Petfinder. We know you do! If you think you would like to “try” fostering, just try it … or better yet, adopt this young man, please contact us. THANKS!

To find out more about fostering please check out the topic at our website under the heading of Akita. That picture is of my own baby boy Akita Yushi.

UPDATE: I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with Lightning on Saturday afternoon. It was only about an hour, but it was time well spent.

We were outside for about 45 minutes. We walked and walked around the property, and then I'd sit down on the bench under the trees and brush and brush his coat. All the while, he was munching on the Greenies I brought him. He allowed me to brush him while he was eating, which is a good temperament indicator. We spent the last 10 or 15 minutes sitting on the cool floor in the reception area, just talking and hugging and spending more quality time together.

Lightning is one lucky dog, and I hope that soon we can find the right lucky person to take him home for good.

P.S. Lightning now has a beautiful chartreuse collar that Erika bought for him!

A message from someone new meeting Lightning for the first time UPDATE: I finally got to meet the infamous Lightning last evening at the Brandywine Veterinary Hospital. What a sweetheart he is! When I got there, he came right out of his cage and we walked out back for a while in the kennel area.

Lightning was a sweet, docile, loving boy. I sat with him for a while in the back, petting him and telling him what a good, beautiful boy he is (and comforting the other dogs in their cages as well). He rubbed against me and put his head in my lap. I then took him out front in the reception area where we visited with all kinds of people and other dogs. He was a perfect gentleman. He didn't snap or growl at anyone. (I had brought him a big biskie and a toy.) He let people pet him and was curious, but polite, to meet the other dogs. He got around very well for not having sight.

Needless to say, Lightning will make someone a very good companion when the right person comes along. He is so gentle and sweet. I am planning to visit him again on Saturday, as Erika will be at a wedding that day. She's been seeing him almost every day - if not every day - so this will give him some company on Saturday, too. UPDATE: He's a blind dog in need of a seeing-eye person!

Lightening is a very loving boy who only wants love in return. I spent a better part of an hour and a half with him on Saturday at Brandywine Vet. He came right up to me and "introduced" himself. He's curious about his surroundings and likes to walk and sniff and check things out. He even went and checked on a kitten who was in the recovery area of the hospital and then came back out to me. He never stammered or tripped. His other sense are very acute and heightened. I watched him approach things in the giant room we were in and it's as though he could sense when he was going to approach something and let himself brush against it and then would reposition himself and walk around it. Honestly, if you were to look at him from behind and didn't see his eyes, you wouldn't have realized he was sight impaired.

We spent our time together on Saturday just sitting together and he would put his head in either my hands, on my shoulder or on my stomach and just close his eyes and give kisses. I massaged him from his neck to his mid-back, avoiding his hind quarters as that area is super sensitive right now do to the heartworm treatments. When I had to leave him, I cried because I fell in love with him. When I had to leave I kissed him and told him I would be back, to my dog's dismay!, this week and promised him I would do everything in my power to find him a great home.

Dr. GallIgher said on Saturday that Lightening is doing really well and tolerated the heartworm treatments. He will need to be retested in 4 months and hopefully will not have to undergo another round of treatment. Keep your fingers crossed. And, that he will need to be neutered since he is an adult male in due time.
