UPDATE from Panda's new family:
Good afternoon Marleen!

I just wanted to give you a quick Panda update - she is the absolute PERFECT dog and is settling into her new home. Although she still hasn't met her cat sisters quite yet...haha.

We went for our first run this morning and Panda was a SUPERSTAR! We went for about 30 minutes with one of my best friends and Panda was leading the pack the whole time, though not pulling at all. We then had a visit from Mimi (a 20-pound black mutt who decided to adopt our family friends, Jill and Andy, about three years ago.) Her and Mimi were running around Panda's new yard, chasing one another - I have a feeling they will be lifelong friends!

After all that excitement, Panda is now sitting in the middle of the living room at my father's feet, taking a nap while we watch the Phillies game.

I hope everything's going well in Delaware! Thanks again for everything and for letting us welcome Panda into our home and lives.

Panda is sending you some kisses!  Erin

This little darling came to us 2-21-09 at 8 weeks when our rescue agreed to overnight (10) puppies for another rescue while they were being transported to NY. Nine of those pups were just fine but Panda was the runt and she was dying. She had not been strong enough to fight for food. She was barely alive. I hand fed her with a dropper for 2 days, she was too weak to eat by herself. Her brothers & sisters went ahead to NY and she stayed here with us. I've enclosed her baby picture below.

As you can see, she is just beautiful, crooked ear and all. She is a true lover and Panda makes us smile every day while she tries to make those long legs work properly. She is just like a gaggly teenager -- all legs.

She is a Collie/Akita mix so whoever adopts her must be an experienced pet owner and someone who has experience with dogs. I happen to cherish the Akita, my favorite breed, I've had 3 in my lifetime --- but they do shed and need lots of grooming. To me they are worth it -- but some may not appreicate that so that's why we explain their true nature.

Her foster Dad *taught* her to get up on the sofa so she is accustomed to being allowed on furniture. It took a month of him encouraging her to get up on the sofa with him until she became big enough to jump up into his lap. For that reason, we would again to prefer to adopt her to not be offended by animals being allowed on the sofa.

She is fully vetted and has been spayed, up-to-date with all shots and microchipped.

PLEASE NOTE: A fence is always mandatory - no exceptions. Be sure to read ALL our adoption policies prior to applying for a puppy/dog.

** If you do NOT agree with our adoption policies - please feel free to apply at a rescue that you do agree with.

If qualified by our adoption policies and you would like to apply online - you must first register on the website and await an e-mailed passcode. Once you have this info, you will be able to access our application.

Our adoption donation is $200 which is (1/2) of what we've actually spent to properly vet & spay/neuter each of our dogs. Adoption donation for any dog 5 years and up is $100.

Any dog/pup adopted from us must have a fenced in property either Physical or Petstop Electric Fence.  We do not accept any other brand due to the high failure rate. The fence must be installed prior to us completing an adoption application. If you need an electric fence contact the company Petstop @ www.petstop.com

We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our "BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children." Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.

We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:

More about Panda/ADOPTED!

Good with Dogs

Special Needs: (1) Akita's can not tolerate Soy in their food so you must be very careful to read labels.
(2) Akita's like Collie's can not tolerate Ivermectin which is the drug in Heartgard - they must use Interceptor as their Heartworm medication.
(3) Sometimes Akita's have problems with their thyroid when they become adults. Simply need $10 worth of medication of month if that should happen.
