PLEASE NOTE: Emiko has been adopted!  Her new Mom is as passionate about the breed Akita as I am. In order to be "owned" by an Akita, you must believe with all your heart that they are the most regal creature ever created.  Emiko now has her very own small 2 legged brother who I know she adores. She adores everyone but she is very fond of kids (many dogs are not) so we feel this is great match for her. She will have long, long walks often and I know that her Mom will have people stop and want to ask about her & admire her. She has always been the "shining star" of our rescue both in her appearance & sweet & loving spirit.

I miss her profoundly, Emiko has been a huge part of my life this last year and half but as always, I have done my job & waited for just the right person to show up who I believe will love her for the rest of her life, as I do.  Love you Emiko and always will --

Came across a video below that says "If it's not an Akita - it's just a dog!" Well, I love my rescued dogs, especially my hounds   -- but I must agree with the statement as a person who has been "owned' by 3 Akita's in my life time. I have the pure joy of being Emiko's foster Mom.  She is an 18 month old,  beautiful, extremely sweet, affectionate (loves to love you all over!) huge female Akita who loves everyone & get's along with other dogs. She is an alpha female but she plays all day with all dogs who do not challenge her. She is also a huge vocal yodeler -- I love the sounds she makes & she makes me smile and laugh every day!

Check out her video's below -  In keeping with her Purebred Akita heritage Emiko means "Smiling Blessed Beautiful Child" in Japanese  -- she is all of that and more. Miko would like to require a law in DE that anyone who passes by her must stop & pet her and stand still so she can bestow all her kisses. She is super affectionate and just adorable. She also makes the wonderful Akita yodeling sounds by making deep rich sounds of pleasure. She is a "talker" who wants to tell you all of her feelings. I just can not keep from smiling and laughing at the long conversations she holds with us.

Miko is already a huge, extremely powerful female Akita, I'm judging she could go to 110 pounds full grown. She needs someone who is as strong as she is, someone who has had the profound pleasure of being "owned" by an Akita by raising one personally as an adult, someone who is experienced at training an Akita, and someone who is young and strong enough take her on LONG daily walks daily for the resf of her life.

She is submissive with humans but she is an alpha female so she must go to a home where she will be the Top Dog. She can not live with another alpha female - a submissive male would be OK but never a female.  She plays well with most of the dogs here but she will not tolerate being growled at or challenged in anyway.

As always when we have Akita's - they can only be adopted to families with prior personal experience with the breed. No others need apply. They are very special dogs and they must go to homes that admire their disposition. Akita's are fearless and loyal guardian to their family. The Akita does not back down from challenges and does not frighten easily. Yet they are also an affectionate, respectful, and amusing dog when properly trained and socialized.

This purebred Akita almost lost her life at the SPCA because her family bought her and then thought they couldn't housebreak her. Well, that's because she had a urinary infection which has since been cleared up. She almost died because they took her to the SPCA instead of the vet! She is certainly housebroken and lives in a foster home. See video below.

Special Needs: (1) Akita's can not tolerate Soy in their food so you must be very careful to read labels.
(2) Akita's like Collie's can not tolerate Ivermectin which is the drug in Heartgard - they must use Interceptor as their Heartworm medication.
(3) Sometimes Akita's have problems with their thyroid when they become adults. Simply need $10 worth of medication of month if that should happen plus blood work should that happen.
