10/ 19/ 06 MAKANA HAS GONE HOME!! MAKANA IS A VERY SPECIAL GIRL WHO HAS FOUND HER FOREVER FAMILY. WHEN SHE MET HER NEW PARENTS TODAY SHE IMMEDIATELY BONDED. HER NEW FAMILY IS VERY EXPERIENCED WITH DOBERMANS AND WITH DOGS WHO REQUIRE A LITTLE EXTRA TIME AND EFFORT. SHE COULD NOT BE LUCKIER!

PLEASE NOTE & SPECIAL NEEDS for Makana does NOT like children and will not be placed with anyone under 12 years old.
Makana has been trained by her foster Mom on a vibrating collar and has learned several basic commands. She needs a family who is willing to learn hand signals for communication that she has been taught.

Makana and her 2 sisters are purebred Dobermans who were born deaf as the result of an unscrupulous backyard breeder who is in Newark DE. She relocated last year from Allentown PA. She says she is a teacher so we are not advising anyone to *buy* a puppy from any breeder in Newark DE who says she is a teacher.

Because they were born deaf they were to be put to death by her. They are otherwise healthy, happy, and playful.
Makana (mah KAH nah) means gift.

7/20/06 We welcomed Makana to our home just 2 days ago. She has already learned to sit, come, and "potty" all with hand commands. To say Makana is a gift is an understatement! She is a gentle loving girl who sounds and behaves as any 4 + month old puppy does. She has met many people in several situations and never gave away her secret. No one knew she was deaf until I told them! Her stomach is a little sensitive so she is on a prescription food. She loves going for car rides. She doesn't even flinch when I trim her nails - a task that can be daunting with some dogs!
July 26th. Gone is that unbalanced puppy!! Makana's trot is strong and sure. She is so quick to learn; in fact, she now knows sit, stay, down, shake, no, go potty, quiet, drop it, and come -all with hand signals. Makana is starting to go to the door to be let outside. She is attentive and eager. Her red coat glistens in the sun and I think she has even grown another 2". What a beautiful, bright girl! Watch for more.

8/31/06 Makana has now been spayed and is just waiting for her special forever home! The girls do have sensitive stomaches so we do have them on Science Diet I/D food which will probably always be necessary.

We would still love some sponsors to help pay for the care of these pups until we can find them their permanent homes.

Please Note:
We do not adopt our puppies to people who work full-time. Part-time is OK. We do not believe in leaving infants in crates all day.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.

We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:

L&F Doggy Playdates ? Your home (New Castle County Only) or at our location in New Castle, DE. Call: 302-613-0394 ?more info at: www.lostandfounddogrescue.org
