PLEASE NOTE: We will not place Lassie in a home with children under 10 or to anyone who plans to have children. She is very sensitive and has shown jealousy of toys and time spent with another pet in the foster home. This means to us, that she NEEDS to be someone's child --- rather then be in competition with one. She is fine with kids, has not shown any aggression, we just feel it would be best for her --- that she get's to be someone's beloved pet.

UPDATE from Lassie's foster Mom:
Lassie has really blossomed over the past few weeks since she's been with
me in foster care. When I took her in, she was a scared, timid, and shy
little girl. But now she's much more confident, happy and playful. She now
enjoys the company of my other dog Blake. Although Blake is older and
smaller than she is, he is the one constantly bugging her to play. She is
not hyper at all, and is content just sitting next to you chewing a bone or
waiting for that occasional belly rub from you. When she does want to
play, she is very gentle with my other dog, and seems to understand he is
alot smaller than she is. She has quite a personality a she plays with him, and pull his tail when he runs past her. Or she'll roll on her back to play with him.

She enjoys being outside just chillin' on the deck. And she loves to run
around in the backyard, chasing squirrels, catching falling leaves. She is also learning how to fetch a ball and play Frisbee. And is starting to bring it back to me so I can throw it again.

The one thing that hasn't changed since she's come to me, is her jealousy
of toys and my attention. Whatever toy my other dog has, she wants it. And
has no problems taking it right out of his mouth. Same thing if I'm paying
attention to another dog. She will push her way in there so that she gets
the attention instead. So if she's in a house with another dog, they will
have to be more submissive and layed back. But unlike the toys & bones, she
is not food aggressive. She doesn't mind sharing her food or water bowl.
And she really doesn't eat alot. She will stop eating when she's full, and
doesn't gobble down the whole bowl of food just b/c it is there.

Lassie is a beautiful girl on the inside and out. With that soft white coat and pretty green eyes. She is truly a very sweet, loving little girl, who just wants to hang out with you. She does like to jump up on the furniture, and still thinks she's a small lap dog. She also likes to bury her bones behind the couch cushions and even outside in the yard. (I don't know if she's afraid someone's going to take them from her. But I think she actually forgets where she hides them).

She's a smart little girl, and seems to be a quick learner. We are still working on her manners. She needs to learn not to jump up on people when she sees them. But she's doing much better on a leash, and taking walks. She enjoys exploring everything while she's walking, so I found she does better on a harness, so that she's not choking herself. She does not bark alot. Only if she's outside, talking to the other dogs. But inside, she actually has a "yiping" or squeeking like bark. And that is mainly to get your attention, or if she's left alone.
She's doing great in the crate, and actually goes in all by herself now if
she knows she'll get a treat for it. No accidents in the crate either. But
I usually only leave her for 4 or 5 hours at a time in the crate. That only
seems fair, b/c she needs to get out and stretch her legs and a chance to
run around a bit.

Lassie will make a great pet for someone, and in return she only asks for your attention, and a little more training.

UPDATE: We had have 12 applications for this little one just because of her size and color. We foster dogs in our homes so that we can evaluate them and their needs. Then we do our best to match our pups/dogs with the life style of applicants. We really need everyone to read a dog's bio before applying.

In Lassie's case we feel the best home for this puppy (and she is only a 6 month old puppy) is where the main caretaker only works part-time
or works from home. She needs to have someone who can be there for her. She had a very rough start in life so this is just what she needs and deserves. They all do!!

She is also afraid of dogs larger then her 23 pounds so if she were to have a buddy, it would have to be a smaller dog and submissive. Since she is only 6 months old we do not know yet if she is going to be an alpha female. She can live with a submissive female or male, alpha or not.

We also feel that she should not live with small kids under 12 years old. She is very needy and wants as much attention as she can gather. Her foster Mom said she is sitting in her lap before she sits down! This is a lap puppy so we need to match her with a family that just LOVES having a dog sitting on their lap all the time. Not everyone wants that from a pet, but if you do, then we have the girl for you.

UPDATE: Lassie now is in a foster home with just one other small dog named Blake. I'm told she is playing with him but is a tad jealous of toys and of her foster Mom. She is a very loving little pup so we may have to put her as an "only child" to be sure that she get's all the love and attention she needs and deserves. She has had a horrible life so far and I feel that she is very sensitive and will need an experienced, gentle family to help her. She needs to be someone's baby girl.

UPDATE: We had a pre-approved adoption application so when Lassie came along, we thought this might be a good match. It turned out that Lassie was perfect in every way except -- she did not like the other dog. She is starting to play with the other dogs but they must be smaller then her. She may have to become an "only child" dog for her sake. This is what our friend had to say about Lassie:

As you know, I had Lassie last Sunday through to Monday afternoon. In 24 hours, I learned that she is just as beautiful on the inside, if not more so, as on the outside. Her intelligence and temperament are equal to her beauty as well.

During the time she was with me, she learned how to sit and stay for a treat as well as for her dinner. We were working on her coming when called (she was getting it) and she learned how to use the pet door on her own just by watching my pets!!!!!

She stayed with me while I was doing laundry, laid at me feet while I was doing dishes, yet she had no problem exploring on her own. Although I was told she was not house broken yet, I gave her free rein and she did not have one accident in the house. Possibly because she learned how to use the pet door so quickly. She LOVED playing with one of my cats who equally enjoyed playing with her. Another of my cats, who is older and not as healthy, did not shy away from Lassie, as Lassie was incredibly gentle and respectful of her. I had some neighborhood children over and Lassie took to them immediately.

Unfortunately, Lassie did not seem interested in my dog who is two years old and a little bigger than she is, but she did become quite animated whenever Gus (the cat) came near. She met the neighbor's dog (2 year old beagle) who is quite the barker. She didn't approach him, but she didn't back down from him. He's (beagle) just about Lassie's size, just a little shorter. She appears to tolerate loud noises, as two of my neighbors were cutting grass simultaneously, and she did not shy away, nor run indoors.

At one point I had to leave Lassie in the yard to go over to a next door neighbor's. She started to "yip", no actual barking as she could still see me through the fence. But I could tell she definitely didn't want to be left alone. WHO DOES?????

She truly is an adoring, loving little girl who looks you in the eye and wants nothing more than to please you. She is gentle, sweet, and incredibly good natured. Oh, and did I mention Intelligent? I know I did, but I'm a tad partial.

Any family with children or cats would be very lucky indeed to have Lassie as a family companion. I'm just sad it could not be me. Good Luck with finding her the perfect home.

Take care, and I'll talk with you soon,
Carol.

Lassie is a smart and pretty little one but she is most definately AFRAID of dogs larger then her. She barks and barks at them and when I pick her up I can feel her little heart beating like crazy.

It may be best for her if she is an "only child" or is adopted into a family with a dog her size or smaller.

She had a play-date and we found she just loves cats and children, and figured out the doggy door right away.

We do not adopt to families with children under 8 years old.

This little lovely creature and her sister Cassi (shown separately) arrived on transport from our favorite shelter, Wetzel in WV.

They arrived 09-23-06, and have already been spayed on 09-25-06.
They will be ready to meet their adoring public 09-30-06.

This is what Rosy, the Director of Wetzel said about our two new girls:

Lassie & Cassi are beautiful young female dogs. Lassie has the look of a golden retriever, but does not look like she will get large. Definitely a mix. Eyes are light colored. She is shy of strangers but quickly makes up to you. Her sister Cassi looks like a chocolate lab with some kind of collie mix. Also very pretty and sweet.

This is their story. The man who brought them told Rosy this is what happened:

They were dumped at this man's home and were there for 3 weeks before he decided to bring them to the shelter --- As "they weren't theirs and they weren't gonna feed 'em anymore."

He had them tied at the back of his truck with ropes. Wouldn't even put them in the bed of his truck! Can you imagine how terrified they were from that?

So sad. They are great, pretty little dogs. Very shy -- but who knows what they have been through in their short lives? They look to be approximately 5-6 months old.

PLEASE NOTE: Please read our adoption policies before applying for a puppy or dog.

Please Note:
We do not adopt our puppies to people who work full-time. Part-time is OK. We do not believe in leaving infants in crates all day.

We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.

We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:
