This is how our poor Handsome Jake lived for over 7 years! This is his story:

As written by the only person who ever cared about him --- Debbie Hefferon:
"I drive seniors & disabled people as my job, I drove his owner to the senior center everyday since 2001. That is how I know Jake. I fed him and gave him water when I went to pick up his owner.
Jake lived on a chain 24/7 for over 7 years. His owner never paid him much attention. I felt so sorry for Jake since he never knew affection, a decent meal (didn't even have a food dish) or clean water. Jake never ran, or played. I fed him & gave him water because his captive/owner did not. You can see the pole & chain he lived on below & the horrible box that was his "home."
Somehow Jake did not go crazy at the end of a chain as I've heard some dogs do. Jake was always happy to see me and I know I was the only highlight of his day. He was never groomed or went to a vet. He was riddled with ticks and does have Lyme disease but is being treated for that.
My daughter Lisa volunteers for L&F Dog Rescue and she told me that they were going to participate in "Chain OFF 2008" 6-28-08 & 7-5 & 7-6 for Dogs Deserve Better to raise awareness for the hundreds of thousands of Jake's who are chained up outside their entire lives - 24/7 in backyards across the country. These poor animals just die a slow painful death at the end of a chain with a broken heart.
Jake's owner was put in the hospital and THANKFULLY the paramedics called the SPCA and they removed Jake. For him, this was like going to a 4 Star Hotel! I found out what SPCA he was in and L&F Dog Rescue agreed to take him into their rescue. We finally got Jake off of the chain!! It was the most amazing event to see him free for the first time in his life. I'm honored to be a part of helping him get off a chain and to safety.
Now Jake is being fostered by my daughter Lisa. He is living a wonderful life now. He was finally been groomed, he was such a mess they actually had to just shave him down. He has been neutered and had all his proper vet care. He gets good meals everyday and has lots of fresh water. The other amazing thing about Jake is he is perfectly housebroken. Lived outside all his life, had to go to the bathroom where he stood and slept, but he is a clean dog who goes to the door to potty!
L&F Dog Rescue believes there is a special family out there who will want to give Jake a real home so that he can know for the rest of his life what it feels like to be cherished. I have been told by L&F Dog Rescue that rescued dogs are so extra special because they seem to really KNOW they have been saved and they show their gratitude every day of their lives to whoever gives them the chance to love and be loved. If qualified by our adoption policies and you would like to apply online - you must first register on the website and await an e-mailed passcode. Once you have this info, you will be able to access our application.
Our adoption donation is $200 which is (1/2) of what we've actually spent to properly vet & spay/neuter each of our dogs. Adoption donation for any dog 5 years and up is $100.
All L&F dogs/pups have been:
Temperament tested and have been chosen for having sweet, gentle dispositions.
House Trained (paper trained if pups)
Crate Trained
Live in foster homes with families.
Up to date with their complete series of Distemper, Parvo vaccines, Rabies & Intra Trac ll Kennel Cough
Already SPAYED/NEUTERED, pups under 5 months must be prepaid
Microchipped with HomeAgain
Tested for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia
On Heartworm medication & Frontline Plus during their stay with us - + they go with a one month supply of each
Two De-Wormings
Any dog/pup adopted from us must have a fenced in property either Physical or Petstop Electric Fence. We do not accept any other brand due to the high failure rate. The fence must be installed prior to us completing an adoption application. If you need an electric fence contact the company Petstop @ www.petstop.com
We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our "BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children." Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.
We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.
