Be sure to watch Mai's videos below
Mai (which means elegant in Japanese) is an Akita puppy who is very sweet, beautiful, and an affectionate ball of energy! She would do best with an adoptive family that has an active lifestyle that includes daily walks, experienced at basic training & we feel due to her intelligence; she could exceed at more advanced training. We also believe that Akita's should only be adopted by experienced parents of dogs who are large & have long, double coats.

It’s so much fun for me (her foster mom) to watch her learn how to do the Akita Woo! She has mastered the "Akita Woo" sound that always revolve around her joy!

I love Akita’s, have had 3 in my personal life & have rescued 3 including Mai, I just adore the breed. She is submissive to people but as with many Akita’s she is head-strong! Mai has a brat factor that sounds like this with her foster Mom. “Mai, come on in.” Mai “No, don’t want to!” “Mai, Now! Come in it time to eat.” NO, I don’t want to I want to keep playing! There are bugs to catch & I want to see just how many times I can run around the entire yard in circles until I make myself dizzy!” This can go on for some time until foster Mom gets the Freshpet dog treat bag & shakes it. Mai will then come in & put herself in her crate & politely wait for her treat.

Her level of activity can & does get on the nerves of the adult foster dogs here at LnF. She only wants to engage them in play but her bouncing around & nips, nibbles, do not endear them to her. So, until she cools her jets with some more maturity, she probably would not do well in a home with other dogs, unless they're as young & playful as she is. In that situation, she would need a dog sister/brother who is larger than her now 63 lbs. with an expected 90 full grown. She plays with our little Yorkie, Lucky Boy (video below) & she nibbles on him until he's soaked & rolls him around like he’s a ball - but he’s not!

Mai came from the First State Animal Shelter & SPCA in Camden Delaware. She was rescued from the streets by a kind animal care officer who saved her life from being killed on the streets & brought to the shelter to safety.  Her previous owner made no attempt to find her.

Mai is fully vetted, spayed, microchipped, house & crate trained and will require a minimum of a 4 foot high fence. She’s waiting in foster care for just the right family to come along. Akita’s are a very special breed & based  upon our experience; we feel they should be adopted by a family that has personal experience loving the magnificent breed ------ the Akita.

She also came to us with the worst case of bladder infection that I've ever had to deal with. I'm sure she never had any shots or any kind of medical treatment in here life. It was necessary for her to complete 3 rounds of antibotics until we were able to clear it up once & for all. Under these circumstances when we have extra medical above our normal costs of shots, spay, microchip, test for Lyme & Heartworm,  we do ask if the adoptive family would be willing to help us pay down her Vet bill. We show all invoices & payments can be made directly to our Vet so you know you are helping the dog you are adopting.

Observations of the dog walker: Mai is a lovely girl. She is energetic and a bit stubborn but is a delight to walk. She has a strong prey instinct. If you keep squirrels as pets, she's not the dog for you. All she needs is consistent training. She's great!

Be sure to read our adoption requirements & if you can meet or exceed them; you can apply online.
