About Austin/ADOPTED!! | |
|
|
UPDATE: Our Austin finally has a home of his own. He now has a Dad Terry and a little 4 legged brother. He is very spoiled and adored. We are so happy for our little guy. We are so happy that we were able to rescue him over a year ago. He had a long road to recovery but now he though he only has 3 legs left, he has all the love a rescue dog deserves. It was a very good day in rescue!
UPDATE: Austin did require amputation of his back leg due to a severe infection that he got from the horrible shelter he was in in South Carolina. We do still owe a little over $500.00 on his vet bill and we would love to have sponsors to help us with his vet bill until his family comes along.
When he walks by my husband he says "Where's your leg?" and Austin just shrugs and says "Don't know, but it's OK, I don't need it, I'm just grateful to be alive and I get around just fine!"
He is shown here in these pictures very happy and playing on my bed. He can easily jump on the bed and sofa and has no limitations that we can see.
He had been hit by a car twice but if you didn't see that it was gone, you would never know it. He has adapted beautifully and he appears quite normal.
UPDATE: Austin is such a special boy. The term companion dog was created for him. He follows me from room to room, even in the bathroom! He just wants to be near you and just settles into any routine that is going on around here. He is terribly loving and looks you right in the eyes and says "What can I do to make you happy?" He would make a great pet for an older couple since he is not high energy, just enjoys the company of humans.
Austin does not enjoy the company of male dogs BUT he LOVES LOVES LOVES the girls. He and Laci are like best friends and sit and play all day together!
UPDATE: Austin is such a pretty, sweet, loving boy. He is mild mannered and has a calm and gentle spirit. His broken leg was repaired but we do need to still work on his PT. He had a complication in that since he was so used to NOT using his back leg when it was broken, that when he started to use it, the pads of his paw got very sore. He only 2 two left, he lost the other 3 when he was hit by the car, so we are taking the time to let his paw heal properly. Then he will start going back to Brandywine Vet Hospital in Chadds Ford for his underwater treadmill treatment.
UPDATE: 12/18/06 This picture was the below was the first we time we saw Austin in a shelter in South Carolina. It was around the 12-01-06. You can see how swollen his back leg is. He is laying on a cold, damp concrete floor with no medical care at all.
Dogs like this are usually put to sleep right away but the rescue people were amazed at how sweet and gentle he was knowing the level of pain he was in. The is a very small, understaffed kill shelter and they do not have the time or inclination to work with a dog with the injuries Austin had. They have to kill normal healthy dogs every day.
Our rescue was sent this e-mail because it is known that we have Dr. Brad Gray who loves to fix "broken dogs" so now we are notified when a sweet dog like Austin shows up.
Of course we said we would take him and he will need sponsors to help him get through this.
This is his story -- more to follow:
Austin has been brought to the vet in order to begin receiving treatment. He has a broken back (right by his tail bone which really can not be repaired due to the location) and a broken hind leg. Our vet was amazed to say the least that first Austin is alive, that he is walking at all, and that he is as sweet as he is. He must have been hit by a car just before 12-01-06 because that is when we first heard about him.
Austin is getting a nice bath, then our vet will operate and neuter him. We didn't tell Austin that was going to happen -- so he will be surprised when he wakes up tomorrow and he is neutered!
12/17/06: This is our newest rescue family member, who has been named Austin. He was directed to us because of a severely broken right hind leg that is also infected. He was at a shelter in South Carolina that had not vet on staff to tend to his serious injuries. Without the proper medical attention, Austin would have been put to sleep. Luckily our Rescue has a wonderful veterinarian who specializes in this type of injury.
We are accepting donations to help defray his medical bills. We have a secure website for VISA/MasterCard and PayPal.

Mention that you saw them at our website. http://www.petstop.com/
We abide by the Humane Association's recommendation. For ANY DOG adoption to have a relatively good chance of success, we believe a child should be 8 years old & up. We only adopt what we call our "BONA-FIDE Kid Lovers to families with children." Many dogs do not want to live with children. You should only adopt a dog who LOVES kids to be sure you are able to make a lifetime commitment to a dog.
We also expect that if no one is home all day, arrangements will be made to provide the dog with at least (1) "potty break" daily. This can be through a family member, neighbor, or Petsitting service. We know that it is impossible for us humans to "hold it" for 8-10 hours, so we do not want our "shelter kids" to be expected to do so.
We have several Petsitting service companies that we can recommend:
